Hundreds of migrants arrive in Greek port of Piraeus

About 800 migrants arrived early Thursday in the Greek port of Piraeus from the islands of Lesbos and Chios, the coastguard said, as the flood of migrants to the European mainland continued.

Some 300 more would arrive later in the day, the Greek coastguard said.

The mayor of Chios called on the government in Athens to provide another ferry to help relieve the island.

State radio station ERT reported that more than 3,000 migrants on the island were waiting to continue their journey to the mainland.
