Holocaust memorial exhibition in Berlin counts 5 millionth visitor

An 18-year-old woman from the eastern German town of Wittenberg on Friday became the 5 millionth visitor to see the exhibition at the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe said.

The high number of visitors was proof that people still felt a great need to engage with the cruelties of Germany's Nazi past, said Culture Minister Monika Gruetters, as she welcomed the student.

The memorial consisting of different-sized concrete blocs or stelae designed by Peter Eisenman has become one of Berlin's best known tourist attractions since opening in 2005.

However, visitor numbers are only counted for the underground exhibition and information centre.
