Greece: EU membership vetoes an option for countries in migration row

Greece does not rule out using a veto of EU membership bids for nations not working towards a common European migration policy, an Athens official said Tuesday.

"We are not excluding it [the possibility of veto]," Greek government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili said.

She did not name anyone, but Greece is angry about the decision of countries on the Balkan migration route to close their borders to people seeking to travel through their territory, meaning many end up stuck in Greece, the first mainland European country they reach.

Two of the countries that are filtering migrants, Macedonia and Serbia, are EU membership candidates.
