Germany reports 15 Zika cases

Germany has 15 known cases of the Zika virus, Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit from the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine told dpa on Friday.

Schmidt-Chanasit said the virus is likely to have been introduced into Germany from Latin America.

The virus has spread rapidly in recent months across central and southern Latin America. The Hamburg-based institute is the Zika reference laboratory in Germany.

Medical experts believe that pregnant women infected with the virus could give birth to babies with malformed skulls and with mental disabilities.
