German warship redrafted to support French missions over Iraq, Syria

A German warship will escort the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle in its next mission against the Islamic State extremist group.

The Augsburg frigate is being prepared for the mission, expected to start in the middle of September, a Defence Ministry spokesman said.

The Charles de Gaulle will serve as a base for military jets carrying out missions over Iraq and Syria.

The Augsburg had carried out a similar support mission for the French carrier from December to March in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf.
