Two German prison guards will face a criminal investigation for letting a convicted rapist escape from a beer hall toilet, the prison in Aachen said Friday.
The two guards failed to perform their official duties, said a spokesman for the Justice Ministry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The 58-year-old convict was on day parole in the western city of Cologne when his two guards took him into a beer hall to use the toilet.
The convict went into the toilet cubicle and managed to sneak away unnoticed while one of the guards was using a urinal, police said.
The man was sentenced to nine years in prison in 1991 but was kept there after authorities deemed him "particularly dangerous," police said.
