EU foreign ministers discussing refugees and aid for Libya

The migrant issue is one of  the main topics on the agenda of Monday's meeting of European Union foreign ministers and a solution should be found in cooperation with countries from where migrants are coming from, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission in the Juncker Commission, Federica Mogherini said on Monday.

The European Union has done a lot in resolving the migrant crisis and there is still a lot more work to do, Mogherini said ahead of the ministerial conference which is being attended by Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miro Kovac.

Mogherini recalled  the sad anniversary of the tragic event exactly a year ago when more than 800 refugees drowned in the Mediterranean.

EU ministers will discuss the EU Strategy for Syria and Iraq, ISIL threats, as well as a response to the recent terrorist attacks in Europe. They will also discuss relations with eastern partners.

During a working dinner, the foreign ministers will be joined by their defence colleagues. They will conduct a video-conference with Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj whom the EU wishes to assist in taking over control of the country.

Mogherini said that the EU is working on concrete projects supporting the Libyan Government of National Accord on the economic and security platforms.

Over the past weeks the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain have visited Tripoli in support of the national government.

A national unity government in Libya is important particularly due to the growing number of refugees who dare to take the dangerous trip across the Mediterranean departing from the Libyan coast toward Italy.

The European Commission has prepared an aid package worth 100 million euro in the form of economic, humanitarian and development aid. The EU is also ready to help in training police forces and coast guards in the fight against terrorism.
