EU Commission says no plan for Juncker to step down in case of Brexit

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker does not plan to resign if Britain votes to leave the European Union this week, his spokesman said Wednesday.

There had been speculation in Brussels that Juncker may be preparing to step down, with media reports also claiming that the leader of the EU's executive is in poor health.

But when asked by a journalist whether there is any plan for Juncker to quit if British voters choose to leave the EU in their referendum on Thursday, spokesman Margaritis Schinas said: "The answer is no."

Juncker has spoken out in favour of Britain remaining a member of the 28-country EU.

"I hope that the Brits will let themselves be led by pragmatism," he told the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview published on Wednesday.

"The Brits need the EU and the EU needs the British pragmatism," he added. "
