Driver tries to ram car into French troops protecting mosque

Soldiers guarding a mosque in the French town of Valence opened fire on a car deliberately attempting to ram into them, officials said Friday.

The driver was struck by two bullets and is in serious condition, a spokesman for the local prefecture said.

Four soldiers were lightly injured and a bystander received a minor injury to his leg after being hit by a stray bullet.

The driver, whose identity has not been released, acted alone and was not previously known to authorities, the spokesman said.

"The soldiers acted with great self-control," Valence Mayor Nicolas Daragon told broadcaster France Info.

Daragon said the mosque in Valence, located south of the city of Lyon, is not known for any radical teachings, and described it as a peaceful place of worship.
