Croatia, Malta report highest increases in number of employed persons in Q4 2015

Croatia and Malta are the two EU countries that saw the highest increase in the number of workers in the last quarter of 2015 as against the previous quarter, the EU's statistical office Eurostat said on Tuesday.

The seasonally-adjusted number of employed persons in Croatia in Q4 2015 rose 0.8% from the previous quarter, when it stagnated. The number of employed persons grew strongly also on the year, by 2.0%, after a decline of 0.3% in the previous quarter, according to Eurostat data.

The number of employed persons increased the most in Malta, by 1.7%, compared to Q3 2015. Significant quarterly increases were also reported by Spain, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal and Sweden, of 0.7%.

The number of employed persons decreased the most on the quarter in Estonia, by 2.4%, and Great Britain, by 1.0%.

On the year, the number of employed persons increased the most in Malta, by 4.6%, and Spain, by 3.0%. According to available data, it decreased only in Romania, by 0.7%.

In the whole of the EU, the number of employed persons in Q4 2015 stagnated compared to the previous three months, when it rose 0.3%. On the year, it increased 1.0%, the same rate as in the July-September 2015 period.

According to seasonally adjusted data, in the EU28, there were 229.9 million employed persons in the last quarter of 2015, including 151.9 million in the euro area.
