City of Paris to open two new refugee centres

Paris plans to open two new reception centres for refugees in an attempt to improve its provision for migrants and prevent further ad-hoc camps.

For months temporary camps consisting of mattresses and tents have sprung up in public spaces, primarily in the north-east of the city, with refugees sleeping out in the open.

The first official camp is expected to open in the north of the city in mid-October and house 400 men initially, Mayor Anne Hidalgo said Tuesday.

The camps are intended to offer emergency accommodation for the refugees for a few days before they are moved on to more permanent accommodation.

By the end of the year, the reception centre's capacity should be increased to 600 beds, while a second centre with 350 spaces for women and families is due to open in the suburb of Ivry-sur-Seine.

Hidalgo made the surprise announcement in May that she intended to set up official refugee camps because the city's existing provisions were overstretched.

The French government announced recently that it would create thousands more places for asylum seekers to stay, also with the aim of closing the notorious "Jungle" camp in the Channel port of Calais, known for its appalling conditions.

Thousands of migrants have set up camp near the Channel crossing in the northern French port in the hopes of stowing away on vehicles heading to Britain.
