Bled: NATO conference on security challenges

The chiefs-of-staff of the armed forces of Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia met on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Slovenian town of Bled with the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO Allied Command Operations, Curtis M. Scaparrotti, and commanders of national guards.

The conference was convened to discuss collective security in NATO, changes in security that have occurred in Europe over the past few years and the way NATO should react to them.

Concluding the conference, Scaparrotti said that the talks in Bled touched on the challenges facing NATO and member states. There was talk of the possibilities of strengthening cooperation within NATO and improving freedom of movement of allied military forces in Europe, as well as of the "Russian aggression" and of ways of dealing with international threats related to the migrant crisis that some member countries are experiencing.

We exchanged experiences on future regional cooperation and the European command is committed to the collective defence of the member-countries, Scaparrotti said.

Europe is reacting properly to new security challenges. We are still not where we should be, but we must remain focused and follow the set objectives, he said.
