Base jumper Uli Emanuele dies after posting about stunt

Extreme sports athlete Uli Emanuele was confirmed dead after posting a photo on Facebook about a stunt in the Dolomites mountain range of Italy, the ANSA news agency reported Thursday.

The South Tyrolean's management confirmed his death but gave no other details. The location of the fatal accident and the circumstances surrounding it remain unclear. The 29-year-old was said to be filming a new video of one of his base jumps - an extreme sport that involves jumping from a fixed structure while wearing a parachute or wing-suit.

Emanuele had posted a photo on his Facebook account Wednesday morning showing him wearing a helmet, cameras and a wing-suit. "Sunrise in the Dolomites," he wrote in what would be his final post at 7:39 am.

Friends and fans wrote good-bye messages on his page and sent their condolences to his friends and family.

A video showing Emanuele soaring through the narrow crevices of the Swiss Lauterbrunnen mountains while wearing a wing-suit a year earlier earned him worldwide recognition.
