The Austrian Foreign Ministry website has become the target of an online attack that originated in Turkey, Austrian government sources said Saturday.
Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz is one of the European Union's most vocal critics of the Turkish government. He welcomed the EU parliament's non-binding resolution this week to suspend Ankara's EU accession talks.
"We won't be intimidated by such attacks. Austria will stick to its position on Turkey," Kurz said in a statement on Saturday.
The incident occurred Friday evening. The ministry quickly took its website offline when it noticed that its server was flooded with online traffic that was apparently launched to shut it down.
A Turkish group of hackers took credit for a cyber attack on Vienna airport in September. The Interior Ministry has also been investigating whether a similar attack against the Austrian central bank was linked to Turkey.
