32 hurt, driver stabbed after car accident in Sardinia

Thirty-two people, including an 11-month baby girl, were injured overnight on the Italian island of Sardinia after a drunk driver crashed into a village festival, Carabinieri police said Friday.

Celebrants of a local patron saint in the town of Nule in Sardinia's heartland turned into a lynch mob after a 43-year-old veterinarian lost control of his Fiat Panda and ran into the crowd at around 1 am (2300 GMT Thursday).

The driver identified as Costantino Francesco Gattu became the 32nd person injured, receiving a beating and five stab wounds before on-duty police officers rescued him.

Gattu, now under arrest in hospital, was "almost five times over the allowed limit" for alcohol, the Carabinieri said in a statement, adding that he risks up to seven years' imprisonment.

The police are trying to catch the assailant who stabbed him.

None of the others injured in the crash are in life-threatening condition. The most seriously injured victims have reported multiple bone fractures, while the 11-month baby is under observation for a concussion.

In March, Italy adopted a tougher law against driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drivers now face up to 18 years imprisonment if they kill people in a road accident, and up to seven years if they cause serious injuries to others.
