112-year-old Holocaust survivor is oldest man on earth

A survivor of the Holocaust has become the oldest man on earth at 112 years of age, after the previous title-holder died in January, the German office of the Guinness World Records said Friday.

Israel Kristal - born on September 15, 1903, in Poland - was deported to the Nazi death camp Auschwitz in 1944. He survived the camp and migrated to Israel on 1950, where he now lives.

The Times of Israel reported that Kristal opened a candy shop in the coastal city of Haifa and that he remarried there after losing his wife in the Holocaust.

Yasutaro Koide, a Japanese man who previously held the title, died in January, also aged 112. The oldest living woman, meanwhile, is Susannah Mushatt Jones, aged 116.
