Austrian Chancellor against barriers on borders

Austria's Chancellor Werner Faymann said on Wednesday he was against erecting fences along the country's frontiers, as previously announced by Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner  who described technical barriers as a way to facilitate the control of the increasing influx of migrants crossing into Austria from Slovenia.

Austria will build "technical barriers" on its border with Slovenia to help control the flow of thousands of migrants crossing daily into Austrian territory, Minister Mikl-Leitner said on Tuesday.

"I have commissioned plans for special construction measures," she was quoted by Austria's APA news agency as saying.

However,  Chancellor Faymann told the state broadcaster that there would be no barriers along Austria's border with Hungary or with Slovenia.

He called on the minister to explain what she was exactly planning to propose to alleviate the migrant crisis along the border, according to local media.

Faymann said the crisis should be first tackled at its source.

He also stressed that there were no borders in the Schengen Area.

An estimated 680,000 migrants have crossed to Europe, mainly from war-ravaged Syria, but also from other Middle East countries and from Africa so far this year.
