The Hungarian Sebo ensemble played compositions from the mid-16th century at the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) on Friday on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Szigeth.
The concert was organised by the Academy and the Hungarian Embassy to Croatia. Sebo is Hungary's most renowned ensemble for early historical and original folk music.
HAZU president Zvonko Kusic said the 1566 battle was one of the most significant events in European history. He praised the cooperation with the Hungarian Embassy and Ambassador Jozsef Magyar as well as with the Hungarian Institute in Zagreb, and announced the main celebration of the battle to take place in Szigetvar, Hungary on September 7. Presidents Janos Ader of Hungary, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic of Croatia and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey will attend.
The battle, also called the Siege of Szigetvar, was fought under the leadership of Nikola Subić Zrinski, Ban of Croatia. The Croatian parliament and the Hungarian government declared 2016 his year.
Ambassador Magyar said it was a great honour that the Sabo concert took place at HAZU, which is in Zagreb's Nikola Subić Zrinski Square, as is the Croatian Foreign Ministry. He said this was a strong message about the link between Croats and Hungarians, who he said were linked by Zrinski and the whole Zrinski family as proof of the coexistence of the two nations.
