The hit HBO series "Game of Thrones," tops the list of nominees at Sunday's 68th Emmy Awards, US television's top honours.

The fantasy series, now in its sixth season, has 23 nominations over all, including best drama - just one shy of the 24 it picked up in 2015, when it won a record 12 Emmys.

"The People vs OJ Simpson: American Crime Story" is running a close second going into the US TV awards, with 22 nominations, including nods for several of the Emmys' top prizes.

The series about the 1995 murder trial of US football star OJ Simpson is up for best limited series as well as two lead acting awards for Courtney B Vance and Cuba Gooding Jr.

The drama series "Fargo" could also win big. It has 18 total nominations, including best limited series and best actress for Kirsten Dunst, while the political satire "Veep" has 17 including best comedy series and best lead actress for Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

One of the world's top television prizes, the Emmys have recognized achievements in dozens of categories for more than 60 years.

This year's edition comes amid a creative resurgence in small-screen entertainment fueled by a shift in at-home, on-demand viewing that has led to what critics have called television's second golden age.

Television and online streaming series regularly draw Hollywoood's top talent, who say they are attracted by the genre's new prestige and creative freedoms.

"Game of Thrones" will compete for best drama series with "House of Cards," "The Americans," "Better Call Saul," "Downton Abbey," "Homeland" and "Mr Robot."

Acting nominees include Kevin Spacey ("House of Cards"), Bob Odenkirk ("Better Call Saul"), Rami Malek (Mr Robot"), Liev Schreiber ("Ray Donovan"), Robin Wright ("House of Cards"), Taraji P Henson ("Empire"), Claire Danes ("Homeland") and Viola Davis ("How to Get Away With Murder").

The Emmys will be presented Sunday in a ceremony at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. US comedian Jimmy Kimmel, whose "Jimmy Kimmel Live" talk show is up for the best variety show award, will host this year's show for the second time.
