Festival of Tolerance taking place in Zagreb

The tenth edition of the Festival of Tolerance - JFF Zagreb started on Saturday evening in Zagreb's Europa cinema, and at the opening ceremony the festival's president and founder Branko Lustig said that this event was dedicated on preventing the phrase "Never Again" from turning into a platitude.

Oscar-winning film producer Lustig, who was born in 1932 in Osijek to a Croatian Jewish family and who survived the Holocaust, warned that the present-day world was experiencing the strengthening of right-wing ideology and hatred, which was why it was necessary to speak about humanity and empathy.

He called for peaceful and cultural dialogue to put an end to evil and destruction.

The festival features close to 70 feature films and documentaries that deal with issues of intolerance towards those who are different, which should be countered by all wishing to live in a free and tolerant society.

The festival, which runs through 15 April, is taking place in Zagreb's Europa and Tuskanac cinemas.

Its mission being to educate young people about the horrors of Nazism and the Holocaust, the festival will include a number of lectures by prominent individuals and round tables.

Admission to all festival events, including concerts, is free.

The main themes of the tenth jubilee edition of the Festival are "the 'legacy' of fascism, the refugees question and the problem of intolerance towards those who are different. These current social happenings increasingly reveal certain socio-cultural antagonisms so the need to speak about injustices, insisting on dialogue and cooperation of the whole community in the fight against discrimination is certainly one of the main goals of the 10th Festival of Tolerance," according to information on the festival's web site.

In attendance at the opening ceremony were Culture Minister Zlatko Hasanbegovic, President  Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic's envoy, Domagoj Juricic, Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic, Israeli Ambassador  Zina Kalay Kleitman and some other distinguished guests.
