International Museum Day will be celebrated in 65 towns in Croatia from May 16 to 21 in about one hundred museums under the theme "Museums and Cultural Landscapes".
The worldwide community of museums will celebrate International Museum Day on and around May 18.
Museums in Croatia are going to present more than 350 programmes on this year's theme "Museums and Cultural Landscapes", with the aim of emphasising a certain responsibility of museums towards the landscapes where they are located, to which they are able to bring their own specific knowledge and skills.
"Cultural landscapes can be identified as places that embody the inextricable connection between material and non-material heritage of a certain area regardless of size, which with time becomes the site of an identity," said Toncika Cukrov of the Museum Documentation Centre, which initiated marking International Museum Day in Croatia in 1980.
Events will continue all week and incorporate International Museum Day marked May 18 and European Museum Night on Mary 21.
In addition to exhibitions and workshops selected by the International Organisation of Museums (ICOM) in Paris, special programmes have been organised -- visits to archaeological sites, expert tours of archaeological heritage, excursions to autochthonous rural areas and expert lectures.
A detailed programme of all the events organised can be found on the website of the Museum Documentation Centre at www.mdc.hr and entry to all events are free.
