Zagreb, Krapina counties to upgrade their public street lighting

The counties of Zagreb and Krapina-Zagorje on Thursday signed an agreement with the Northwest Croatia Regional Energy Agency launching the first phase of a EUR 20 million project designed to upgrade public street lighting in the two counties, as a result of which the cost of public lighting could be reduced by up to 60%.

The project relates to a detailed check of 68,000 public lighting units in 57 towns and municipalities in Zagreb and Krapina-Zagorje counties. Ninety percent of the funding needed to carry out preparatory activities, estimated at EUR 790,000, will be secured from European sources and the remaining 10% will be provided by the two counties, said Zagreb County head Stjepan Kozic.

The European funding for the project has been secured under the European Local Energy Assistance (ELENA) programme, launched by the European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Kozic said this was the first time a project had been launched in Croatia under the ELENA programme.

The head of the Northwest Croatia Regional Energy Agency, Julije Domac, said that the EUR 790,000 would suffice for a detailed check of the public lighting system in the two countries and for the preparation of the project documentation, after which a project would be designed, an application would be submitted for EU funding and the project would be implemented.

"The investment amounts to some 20 million euros in total. The project will include technical and financial analyses and within a period of three years investments are to be launched in the 57 towns and municipalities based on the model of public-private partnership," Domac said.
