Zagreb Archbishop says starting anew makes sense

Zagreb Archbishop Cardinal Josip Bozanic said in his Christmas sermon in Zagreb Cathedral on Friday that God taught us with Christmas that it made sense to start anew regardless of what hit a person, a society or a community, and that Christmas made it easier to see who was an original and who an imitation.

As believers in Croatian society, we can see that in the background of so many living difficulties troubling our people lies the syndrome of imitating certain structures, he said. "Isn't the fact that the number of poor citizens is increasing in our society, that production is being shut down, that farms are dying out, that more and more families are knocking on the door of out Caritas an indicator that the economic and social strategy are being imitated more than lived?"

Isn't accepting the fact that so many can't find a job in their country just an imitation of the care for Croatia's future and less real commitment, Bozanic wondered.

Isn't the fact that Christian values enter educational systems with so much effort, with parents' voice meaning so little to those in charge, an indicator of an imitation of the education model as a joint endeavour of schools and parents, and less of it being really lived, he asked.

He said the light of Christmas revealed too many imitations in social relations, internationally too, whose goal was not the common good but a particular good, the good of a minority to the detriment of the majority.
