Varga: Announced health reforms continuation of outgoing govt's project

Outgoing Health Minister Sinisa Varga on Friday commented on PM-Designate Tihomir Oreskovic's announcement of reforms in public procurement and administration in the health sector and said that this was the continuation of the project that the outgoing government had launched.

The health sector administration, Varga claimed, introduced a quality management system in the Health Ministry and Croatian Health Insurance Institute (HZZO). It also prepared a bill on quality and logistics in the health sector which has gone through a public debate and foresees measures to improve quality and streamline the public procurement system with the introduction of a central software system.

The director of the Croatian Employers' Association, Drazen Jurkovic, believes that savings in public procurement and administration in the health sector was possible, but that it should not result in a reduction of the health budget as that would lead to a fall in quality and accessibility to health services by citizens.

Jurkovic believes that it was necessary to continue implementing the masterplan to merge activities in hospitals and that savings in public procurement, whether this be centralised or decentralised, was possible as soon as precise needs were defined and if tenders were conducted properly in an open and equal opportunities manner for all.

Greater efficiency in health administration requires the adoption of standards and creation of conditions that will stop the drain of medical staff, Jurkovic underscored.
