Tudjman says Oreskovic's staying at gov't helm unrealistic

Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) MP Miroslav Tudjman, who earlier this week declined to sign a motion for the impeachment of Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic, said on Thursday that a scenario in which Oreskovic would stay at the government's helm was unrealistic, expressing confidence that the junior partner in the government, Bridge, was not united in supporting the incumbent prime minister.

Tudjman told the press in parliament he had no information on the names mentioned as possible new prime ministers- designate, such as incumbent ministers Zdravko Maric and Oleg Butkovic, but noted that "they are decent people".

"It is important to stress that we finally leave this story behind, namely whether or not there will be a government reshuffle. We are headed towards a new government makeup, the procedure requires a new government," Tudjman said.

Asked if it was possible for Oreskovic to remain at the helm of the government while HDZ chief Tomislav Karamarko and Bridge chief Bozo Petrov would step down, Tudjman said this was not a realistic scenario.

"I don't think this is a realistic option, given the statements Bridge deputies made to the press that indicate that they are not satisfied with Oreskovic either," Tudjman said.

Tudjman said he did not know if the HDZ had already secured a parliamentary majority to appoint a new government.

He said he was confident that after leaving the government, Karamarko would be able to protect his position through his work in parliament and the party.
