Tomislav Karamarko sole candidate for HDZ leader

The election commission of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party has received only one valid nomination for the post of the party's leader, that of the incumbent Tomislav Karamarko, backed by over 30,000 valid signatures, the HDZ said in a statement on Wednesday.

The HDZ will hold an intra-party election on April 17 and for the first time voting will be conducted on a one-member-one-vote basis.

Karamarko submitted 30,004 signatures of his supporters to the election commission on Monday, saying that his aim was to further strengthen the party. He said that over the next four years he would focus on the implementation of the HDZ's economic programme, drawn up in cooperation with the German IFO Institute for Economic Studies.
