SDP questions govt on possible joint construction of nuclear power plant with Hungary

Social Democratic Party (SDP) MPs addressed to the government a number of questions concerning a statement by Minister of Entrepreneurship and Crafts Darko Horvat that Croatia was interested in the joint construction of the Paks nuclear power plant in Hungary, and depending on the government's reaction, SDP will decide whether it will request an interpellation in that regard, SDP MP Josko Klisovic said on Tuesday.

"Given that energy falls in the remit of Bridge's economy minister, this just goes to show that there is a lack of coordination in the government or perhaps the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) wishes to take control of those portfolios where the big money is," Klisovic told reporters in parliament.

He recalled that the government had recently requested an estimate of the value of the national electricity provider HEP, which could be taken as an intention to privatise the company. "At the moment it is unclear whether entering into such a major deal with Hungary is related to Hungary possibly entering HEP in a similar way to the one in the case of INA," Klisovic said.

Asked whether he was concerned that the same names appear in both the Paks and INA cases, namely people connected with First Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Karamarko, Klisovic said that is one of the reasons why the government has been asked to explain. "There is a lot that is unclear. We don't want to speculate without firm evidence, but some suspicion certainly exists," he said.
