The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Head Committee convened on Saturday to call intra-party elections and analyse the results of the recently held parliamentary election which the party lost and which was the reason why SDP chief Zoran Milanovic announced he would not run for the position of party president.
The first round of the election for the new party leader should be held on 19 November, as proposed by the SDP presidency, following the principle "one member-one vote." The second round will be held a week later and the convention at which other party bodies will be elected will be held on December 3.
So far, seven SDP members have announced their candidacy for party president -- Tonino Picula, Ranko Ostojic, Orsat Miljenic, Domagoj Hajdukovic, Vesna Skulic, Gordana Sobol and Karolina Leakovic.
Media are speculating that other prominent SDP member could run for the position, such as the head of the SDP Zagreb branch, Davor Bernardic, but no official confirmation has been given yet.
Zoran Milanovic addressed today's session for the last time as SDP chief.
"Keep building this house we built together and let responsibility to change things for the better be your main objective," Milanovic said at the session.
