"Sacrifice of Borovo Naselje for the Homeland" commemoration held

Memorial ceremonies began in the Vukovar suburb of Borovo Naselje on Thursday morning to commemorate the people killed there during the Serbian military aggression on the town 24 years ago.

Numerous delegations laid wreaths and lit candles at the monument erected on the former site of the Borovo Commerce company. A prayer for those killed and gone missing was said by local priest Vjenceslav Janjic and Kotor bishop Ilija Janjic.

About 800 wounded Croatian soldiers and civilians were accommodated in the basement of the Borovo Commerce building when the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and Serb paramilitary troops entered Vukovar. After the occupation of Borovo Naselje, 115 people staying in the Borovo Commerce building were taken away, and 51 people were killed on the day of occupation, November 19, 1991.

The head of the Mothers of Vukovar association, Manda Patko,  gave a talk at the event, saying that Croatia was still searching for 290 persons who went missing in Vukovar in 1991.

The commemoration was held under the slogan "Sacrifice of Borovo Naselje for the Homeland."
