The majority in the parliamentary Elections and Appointments Committee on Friday turned down a proposal from Opposition party benches that former minister of the interior Ranko Ostojic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) be appointed chair of the Home Affairs and National Security Committee.
Ostojic's nomination was supported only by three MPs from the SDP and the Croatian People's Party (HNS), while committee members from the Patriotic Coalition and Bridge voted against.
The vote was taken without a prior debate, and committee chair Franjo Lucic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) told reporters after the session that he did not contest the Opposition's right to appoint the chair of the Home Affairs and National Security Committee but that Ostojic "is not an appropriate candidate."
Lucic said, among other things, that in his public statements about intra-party elections in the SDP Ostojic had demonstrated "aggression and insecurity."
Lucic said he was confident that there would be no delays in the work of the Home Affairs and National Security Committee and that the SDP would nominate another candidate until the next session of the Elections and Appointments Committee.
Nominations for the chairs and deputy chairs of other committees whose leading positions had remained vacant were unanimously supported by the Elections and Appointments Committee.
Branko Grcic (SDP) was unanimously proposed for the chair of the Tourism Committee, Arsen Bauk (SDP) was proposed for the chair of the Justice Committee, Mirando Mrsic (SDP) was nominated for the chair of the Labour Committee, and Ivan Vrdoljak of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) was nominated for the position of the chair the Committee on the Family, Youth and Sports.
Orsat Miljenic was proposed for the position of the deputy chair of the Legislation Committee, Tomislav Saucha was nominated for the position of the deputy chair of the European Affairs Committee, and Josko Klisovic for the position of the deputy chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee. All three are SDP members.
