Remains of 56 war casualties exhumed at Gornje Seliste

Remains of 56 people, presumably Serbs killed during the war in 1995, have been exhumed from a mass grave near the municipal cemetery in Gornje Seliste, the Ministry of Veterans' Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

The exhumation lasted eight days. The remains of 56 people, killed during a Croatian military offensive known as Operation Storm in the summer of 1995, were found at two locations. After samples were taken for DNA analysis, the remains were returned to the communal grave pending identification and formal reburial in accordance with the wishes of the families.

The exhumation was attended by experts from the Serbian government's Commission on Missing Persons and the International Commission on Missing Persons.

Remains of 1,081 people killed in 1995 have been exhumed to date, of whom 681 have been identified. In total, remains of 5,056 people killed during Croatia's 1991-1995 war of independence have been exhumed to date, of whom 4,090 have been identified, the statement said.

Gornje Seliste is located near Glina, about 80 kilometres south of Zagreb.
