The Reformist Party leader and member of Parliament, Radimir Cacic, on Tuesday warned that casual employment contracts were now prevailing in Croatia, corroborating his claim with the statistics showing that fixed-term contracts accounted for 93% of all new employment contracts in the 2012-2015 period.
Of 203,000 newly-employed workers in Croatia in 2014, as many as 192,000, or 94.2%, were employed for a specific period of time, Cacic said at a news conference at which he presented his initiative about defining which economic sectors should have limits on the number of fixed-term contracts.
Cacic called on lawmakers to support his initiative to amend the relevant legislation and urged the government to address this matter in the next three months.
Describing a rising number of causal employment contracts as "a crime against citizens of Croatia", he warned that this trend was also damaging the economy.
Workers employed for a specific period of time are deprived of a series of rights such as eligibility to loans and membership in trade unions, according to Cacic.
The Reformist Party chief said that there were economic sectors such as tourism where there were justified reasons for large-scale employment for a specific period of time but, for instance, the manufacturing sector did not have justified reasons for this.
Therefore, he called on the government to regulate this matter through the labour legislation.
