Questioning need for Const. Court motivated by will for political power without judicial control

Constitutional Court President Jasna Omejec said in an interview with the Vecernji List daily, which hit the newsstands on Saturday, that in her opinion disputing the need for a constitutional court was motivated by the will for an unlimited political power, without a judicial control of political decisions.

The Constitutional Court serves the citizens, it protects them from government autocracy, whether it be about the law, a regulation or a court ruling, Omejec said asked to comment on Labour Party president Nansi Tireli's opinion that the Constitutional Court was unnecessary because there is the European Court of Human Rights and on Bridge party MP Ivan Lovrinovic question why Croatia had the Constitutional Court given that its rulings take forever, as well as on criticism by other political and judicial figures.

"We would like to believe that the advocates of those ideas that are hard to understand are in fact ignorant and uninformed... However, I don't know who is more dangerous, them or the politicians who know something about the constitutional judiciary," Omejec said.

"To allow an amendment on the cancellation of the Constitutional Court, such a decision to change the Constitution would have to be adopted at a referendum, because without its Constitutional Court Croatia would no longer be the country we created in 1991," Omejec said.
