Commenting on an open letter which a group of members of Parliament from the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition sent to the Croatian government, the UN Security Council, and permanent and current non-permanent members of the UN Security Council against her candidacy for UN Secretary-General, Vesna Pusic on Thursday said that campaigning against Croatia's candidate for the UN Secretary-general meant campaigning against Croatia, adding however that she personally could not be harmed by people who use hate speech.
"For the first time in history, Croatia has an opportunity to nominate a candidate for the position of the UN Secretary-General. Under the existing rules, Croatia will have that chance again in 50 years. The person in that position must represent universal human values: peace and security, human rights and everyone's right to development and prosperity. Agitating against the candidacy of Croatia's representative means agitating against Croatia. However, given that these people are advocating and using hate speech, fear, threats, discrimination and exclusion, they are not harming me personally. I advocate the opposite and (their letter) is in fact a recommendation for me for the position of UN Secretary-General," Pusic wrote on her Facebook wall.
A group of members of Parliament from the HDZ-led Patriotic Coalition sent the open letter to the Croatian government, the UN Security Council, and permanent and current non-permanent members of the UN Security Council warning that Vesna Pusic's candidacy for UN Secretary-General lacked the legal validity and moral legitimacy required for that high position.
"The candidacy of Vesna Pusic has no legal validity because she was nominated by the outgoing government led by Zoran Milanovic, and she exploited the legal vacuum before the formation of the new government, which in case of a debate would have certainly challenged her candidacy," reads the open letter signed by 22 members of Parliament from the Patriotic Coalition at the proposal of Pero Coric of the Croatian Party of Rights - Ante Starcevic (HSP AS).
