Croatian People's Party (HNS) leader and former Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic said on Tuesday that deploying troops to the border is not the way to deal with the ongoing refugee crisis.
"If there's no war, there's no reason to deploy troops to the border," Pusic told the press in the Parliament building. She said that Croatia should exert pressure on the European Union and its institutions to deal with the refugee problem through further talks with Turkey.
"The situation that we now have, with people amassing in Greece or anywhere else along the way, is not a solution. We must seek a joint European solution," she stressed.
Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic said earlier on Tuesday that he was considering the possibility of sending troops to the border to prevent refugees and migrants from the Middle East and elsewhere from entering the country. "We will most probably do that, but we fully rely on our police forces. The Slovenians have done that, the Serbs too. We will use that potential but only to increase our readiness."
