Plenkovic: National, social goals must be above political, ideological differences

Prime Minister-Designate Andrej Plenkovic said on Wednesday that achieving unity of national and social goals must be above political and ideological differences, which is why his cabinet will pursue a policy of national unity and promote responsibly dealing with the past and condemning all non-democratic systems.

"Regardless of which party our members belong to, the government I will lead will be a government of all Croatian citizens. Achieving unity of national and social goals must be above political and ideological differences, so the government will pursue a policy of national unity. We will promote responsibly dealing with the past and condemning all non-democratic systems which caused the tragic suffering, persecution and execution of political opponents in Croatia over the past century," Plenkovic said while presenting his cabinet in parliament.

The cabinet's work will focus on rising above social divisions and bringing justice to the victims of all totalitarian systems. Plenkovic said he was confident that the government would cooperate well with parliament.

Constructive criticism and discussions based on arguments in parliament which will lead to more successful public policies are in Croatia's interest, he said, calling on all parliamentary parties to be constructive in their work and cooperate in parliamentary bodies and at plenaries.

"I assure you that, as the prime minister of all Croatian citizens, I will consider all proposals aimed at Croatia's well-being under the highest democratic standards," Plenkovic said.

Presenting the ministerial nominees, he said he expected each to apply the highest professional standards. The results will not be visible in the short term, but we need determination and perseverance in making the right moves which will make Croatia a better and more functioning country in the medium and long-terms, he added.

"The cabinet I am proposing is a result of political cooperation, first and foremost between the HDZ, based on the election results, and our partners during that election and the Bridge party. Our programmes are compatible and complementary in great measure and, based on a detailed analysis, they have become the work programme of the joint government," Plenkovic said.

He said the cabinet would be supported by the deputies of ethnic minorities, who substantially contributed to the government's agenda, as well as by the deputies of the Croatian Peasant Party, the Reformists and Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic's party.
