Petrov: Maric's appointment as minister without portfolio agreed with Bridge party

Prime Minister designate Andrej Plenkovic sent to parliament late on Tuesday evening a proposal to appoint Goran Maric of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) a minister without a portfolio who will be in charge of managing state property and coordination between state offices and Parliament Speaker Bozo Petrov confirmed on Wednesday the decision was agreed with his Bridge party.

"This was one of the possibilities and it was one of the topics discussed yesterday. It is important to us to have a person who will coordinate between various offices and ministries. That person can be a deputy minister or a minister without a portfolio. As far as we are concerned, Mr. Maric is a quality person and we support that," Petrov told the press on Wednesday ahead of a joint session of the parliamentary benches of the Bridge party and the HDZ.

Unofficial information surfaced this morning according to which Maric refused the position of a minister without a portfolio, asking for a guarantee that a new ministry would be formed in the near future, while Petrov rejected this proposal.

"We did not talk about this. I would leave a possible (government) reshuffle open for now. We'll see about that along the way," Petrov said, adding that he did not believe that the current number of ministries would go up.

Asked to if he was satisfied with the programme of Plenkovic's government, Petrov said: "I believe the government will work according to this programme for the next four years... I hope there will be partner cooperation in the government and that this government will be more stable than the last one."
