Papuk enters list of UNESCO Global Geoparks

The Papuk Nature Park, located in the forested mountains of Mount Papuk and Mount Krndija in the Croatian region of Slavonia, has been added to 120 geoparks in 33 countries worldwide that enjoy UNESCO protection.

Recently, UNESCO introduced the International Geoscience and Geoparks Programme (IGGP) and started awarding a label "the UNESCO Global Geoparks".

Croatia's Environment Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlovic  has said that the award will help the promotion of the Papuk Nature park.

The Papuk Geopark became the first Croatian geopark and the 30th member of the European Geoparks Network.
