Pahor says prospects of EU, NATO membership facilitate peace

The prospects of joining the European Union and NATO are important for south-east European countries as they give an impetus to the implementation of reforms and preserve peace and stability, Slovenia's President Borut Pahor said on Wednesday after he met U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden on the margins of an extraordinary summit of the Brdo-Brijuni Process  in Zagreb.

Pahor said he saw the Zagreb event as an attempt to support the European prospects of the countries in the region and also as support for the NATO membership bids of those countries that aspire to join the alliance.

He said that he and Biden had also discussed the refugee crisis and efforts to ration the number of refugees as well as concerted actions aimed at preventing humanitarian problems.

The Slovenian president, who co-chaired the Zagreb conference together with his Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, described his meeting with Biden as good and useful.
