Former Interior Minister Ranko Ostojic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) was appointed Chairman of the Domestic Policy and National Security Committee of the Croatian Parliament on Friday.
Eighty-one MPs voted in favour, including those from the Bridge party, a junior member of the ruling coalition, while the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ)-led Patriotic Coalition voted against.
The ruling coalition said last Friday that Ostojic was unacceptable for the post because in his statements during the SDP's intra-party elections he was "aggressive and insecure". The opposition insisted that Ostojic, as a professional, was the right choice for the position and that the SDP, as the largest opposition party, had the right to decide on its own who to appoint as chair.
No discussion preceded the vote.
