Caretaker Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic said on Saturday that the leaders of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Andrej Plekovic and Zoran Milanovic respectively, did not criticise one another too harshly in a debate aired on Friday evening, noting that they were polite to each other.
"They were almost like two brothers, it was beautiful to see it," Oreskovic told reporters in Metkovic, where he attended a race of local native vessels.
"The emphasis was on the substance, which is great for Croatia," Oreskovic said in his comment on the face-off.
He expressed hope that the campaign for the September 11 election would not be dominated by negative topics.
"I think that citizens have had enough of the past and ideology," he said.
Commenting on the two parties' economic platforms, he said that "many promises are being made."
He said that some figures presented in the debate seemed a little inflated.
When asked which figures he was referring to, Oreskovic said that he would not "go into details now" and that experts should comment on it.
"Some figures seem a little exaggerated and I believe that citizens are aware of that," he said, adding that one should be realistic and make plans that were possible to carry out.
