New twist in Bridge party, door still open to HDZ

Another twist occurred in the Bridge party on Sunday as its National Council unanimously decided that the door remained open to the Croatian Democratic Union-led (HDZ) Patriotic Coalition, which last night walked out of negotiations on a tripartite government.

Bridge MP Miro Bulj said so to the press after a National Council session, just before the arrival of the Social Democratic Party-led (SDP) Croatia Is Growing coalition to the negotiations.

This decision is contrary to Bridge leader Bozo Petrov's statement last night, after the HDZ walked out, that Bridge would continue negotiations on the new government only with the SDP.

"Just as we left the door open to the SDP before, now we are leaving them open to the HDZ," Bulj said, adding that a tripartite government was the way to carry out reforms.

Neither SDP leader Zoran Milanovic nor his coalition partners would comment on the latest turn of events before arriving at the negotiations.

Bridge MP Ines Strenja Linic said on Croatian Television earlier today that she thought the prime minister-designate would be known on Tuesday. "We expected both sides to sign what they agreed to, but it didn't happen. The SDP gave up and then changed its mind, and the HDZ changed its mind yesterday. We still expect some changes," she said, adding that Bridge's door was open to the HDZ.

She said Bridge and the SDP wanted Petrov to be prime minister. "We talked with some experts, but I think Petrov will be prime minister."

The HDZ unofficially said Bridge's latest offer would be discussed by the HDZ Presidency on Monday.
