New government's foreign policy guidelines

Strengthening the position of Croatia in the world, making the most of EU and NATO membership and strong vertical and horizontal cooperation are mentioned in the foreign policy guidelines of the future government.

Vertical cooperation relates to the Central European countries of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia and the Adriatic-Baltic-Black Sea initiative, while horizontal cooperation concerns Italy, Austria, Slovenia and eastern neighbours. Croatia must play a strong role in both directions and act as a factor of their integration, the guidelines say.

EU membership should be made as beneficial as possible to Croatia through effective coordination of state administration, regional and local government, and parliament.

Croatia has a special responsibility towards Bosnia and Herzegovina because of the Croats living there. As a signatory to the Dayton peace agreement, it will insist on the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina enjoying equal rights as the other two constituent peoples, Bosniaks and Serbs, and will support Bosnia and Herzegovina's integration into the European Union.

The new government will also work on strengthening ties between Croats abroad and their native country.

As for the influx of refugees from the Middle East and elsewhere, the government will protect Croatian interests in cooperation with other countries along the Balkan migration route and the EU.

The new government also aims to promote Croatian economic interests and culture abroad.
