Interior Minister Vlaho Orepic said in Zupa Dubrovacka, southern Croatia, on Monday that Croatia went from being a passive observer to an active participant in the creation of the security policy of the European Union and Southeast Europe, adding that Croatia had positioned itself as a friendly, humane and safe country.
Addressing the press on the margins of a ministerial conference, held as part of the Salzburg Forum on Monday and Tuesday, Orepic said that humanity and security must not be neglected when tackling issues such as migration and border control.
"During the intensive refugee wave, more than 686,000 migrants passed through Croatia and Croatia provided for them. At the same time, more than 14 million tourists entered Croatia and made over 78 million overnights. This shows how capable Croatia is. It has positioned itself as a friendly and humane country, and particularly a safe country," Orepic said.
Orepic held talks with European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos. After the talks, Avramopoulos told the press that no country could handle the refugee crisis on its own.
This is a very important meeting and it comes at an important moment not only for the region but for the entire Europe. During the meeting we have reiterated our commitment to resolve this situation. It is very important to stress that no country can resolve this on its own. This is why we need to show solidarity. Solidarity and responsibility are the two main pillars on which Europe was built, the EC Commissioner said.
The ministerial conference was attended by the interior ministers of the Salzburg Forum member states, countries members of the Group of Friends and representatives of European institutions and agencies, international organisations and partners.
