Milanovic says withdrawal from border arbitration one of his favourite decisions

Former prime minister Zoran Milanovic said on Friday, after the Arbitral Tribunal decided that deliberations on the border dispute between Croatia and Slovenia would remain suspended, that one of the most favourite decisions of his government was to withdraw from the arbitration because it was the result of blackmail used by Slovenia to block Croatia's EU membership talks.

"The tribunal is now buying time and I think that all this is leading to a definitive and unpostponable end of the arbitration," Milanovic said during a visit to the Istria County town of Pazin. He added that he expected the case to end up "where we had hoped, and that is before the International Court of Justice where international law will apply."

The Arbitral Tribunal announced on Friday that deliberations on the border dispute would remain suspended until it studied the legal implications of Croatia's decision to withdraw from the arbitration process.

"Maybe the tribunal will not render an award at all and the situation will remain as it is, but the arbitration was the result of direct blackmail on the part of Slovenia with the European Commission's sponsorship and I managed to get Croatia out of it," Milanovic said.
