Milanovic says bridge to connect mainland, Ciovo island will be opened by year's end

Representatives of the Social Democratic Party (SDP)-led People's Coalition said in Trogir on Saturday that if the coalition won the September 11 election, it would improve the municipal infrastructure in that town, located on an islet close to the mainland, while SDP leader Zoran Milanovic said that a new bridge to link the mainland with the nearby island of Ciovo would be inaugurated by the end of the year.

Milanovic told residents of Trogir, who have been experiencing major traffic jams due to the current tourist season, that next summer the traffic flow would be faster and they would have a better municipal infrastructure, which, he added, would increase the value of their real estate and property.

He recalled that it was his government that had launched the construction of the bridge to link the mainland and Ciovo by signing with contractors an agreement worth HRK 129.5 million, to be financed by the EU with 85% of the contract value.

Presenting the coalition's platform, former SDP transport minister Sinisa Hajdas Doncic said that the People's Coalition would work on improving the municipal standard of Trogir residents.

"We will solve the problem of local traffic jams and improve the local municipal infrastructure and we will also build some 50 kilometres of roads and 260 kilometres of railways with the help of EU funds. The infrastructure should be planned and coordinated, and that can be done only by a government that has a safe course," Hajdas Doncic said, calling on voters to vote for the People's Coalition.

Answering a reporter's question, Milanovic dismissed the possibility of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) reforming, now that the party has a new leader (Andrej Plenkovic) and the name of Bozidar Kalmeta, the mayor of Zadar and a former minister indicted for siphoning from public companies with his associates more than HRK 15 million and EUR 850,000, is no longer on the HDZ's slates.

"I did not engage in personalities and I won't do it now, regarding the new HDZ president, either, but I don't believe in that (reformation)," Milanovic said.

He said that the early parliamentary election set for September 11 would be tough and that the HDZ and its partners should not be underestimated.

"I call on citizens to go to the polls and choose a safe course. It's time for boring years, for a calm and safe navigation, without the war and 1941," he said.

Also attending the presentation of the coalition platform in Trogir was Ivan Vrdoljak, leader of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), a member of the People's Coalition.
