Milanovic: Only Karamarko or I can be prime minister

Zoran Milanovic said on Monday that only Tomislav Karamarko, as the leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and the Patriotic Coalition, and he as the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Croatia Is Growing coalition had electoral legitimacy to become prime minister.

"After these elections only two persons in Croatia have legitimacy to lead the Croatian government: Tomislav Karamarko and I," Milanovic told the press in the President's Office after consultations of the two coalitions with President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic on the appointment of a prime minister-designate.

Milanovic said that a non-partisan prime minister, as proposed by the Bridge reformist party, would be "a deception of the voters" and would weaken Croatia.

Milanovic said that responsibility now lay with elected members of Parliament to decide whether the new parliament would be formed or not. "As long as they do not do it, they hold this country hostage in a way," he said, confirming that he did not have the necessary 76 signatures of support to become the prime minister-designate, but that he had "considerably more than Karamarko."

Karamarko did not speak to the press after the joint meeting.
