As many as 11,500 migrants enter Croatia in last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours 11,500 refugees and migrants have entered Croatia, the largest number to arrive in a single day in nearly 40 days since the refugee influx hit the country, Vukovar-Srijem County police spokesman Domagoj Dzigumovic said on Sunday.

Refugees and migrants, who are fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa, have continued to enter Croatia at Bapska from Serbia. They are taken to the Opatovac reception centre where they are registered and provided with the necessary assistance, after which they are taken by bus or by train to the Slovenian border.

Dzigumovic said that the entire process of receiving and sending refugees and migrants on to Slovenia was proceeding without major delays, and that police and support staff were getting used to an increased influx from Serbia.

In Tovarnik, refugees and migrants were boarding the fourth train since midnight and 22 buses left Opatovac for Slovenia on Sunday morning.

According to the police, 4,361 people stayed at the Opatovac reception centre on Sunday morning and 1,900 were there shortly before noon. More were expected to arrive from Serbia.

A total of 247,282 migrants and refugees have entered Croatia since mid-September.

Slovenian police said on Sunday that 62,235 refugees had entered Slovenia in the last nine days and that Austria had received 37,655 since Tuesday.
