The Croatian Labour Party announced at a news conference in Koprivnica on Monday that they would organise a protest in Zagreb on Saturday against the sale of the Podravka food company and other strategic Croatian companies.
"Podravka is a company of strategic interest and the sale of the state share would result in a catastrophe for Koprivnica and this region. With its sale, the agriculture in this region would lose prospects because the new owner will buy cheap raw materials at foreign markets. The sale of other companies, arranged at conference calls, is a bad scenario which we must put an end to. We want to stop the sale of the family silver and this is why we are organising Saturday's protest," Labour Party president Tomislav Koncevski told the press.
He said the peaceful protest would start at 1700 hours on Saturday in Zagreb's Zrinjevac park, adding that transport for those who want to take part in the protest would be organised in all parts of Croatia.
The Koprivnica branch of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) is also against the sale of Podravka, calling on the government to reconsider its decision to take Podravka off the list of companies of strategic interest in order to privatise it.
The Croatian government has recently decided to remove eight companies from the list of enterprises regarded to be of strategic and special interest for the country and one of those is Podravka.
This past Thursday, Prime Minister Tihomir Oreskovic reassured all those opposing the sale of Podravka that the government would not sell all the companies that had been removed from the list of strategic enterprises, and one of those that should not be sold is Podravka.
