Karamarko: says HDZ not preparing lustration law

The First Deputy Prime Minister and president of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), Tomislav Karamarko, said in the northern Croatian city of Varazdin on Monday evening that his party was not drawing up a lustration law.

Asked about lustration, Karamarko reiterated that this was "a change of social climate, distancing from every form of totalitarianism" and that "all of us finally must understand that crimes had been committed by all totalitarian regimes in the 20th century." He said the HDZ was not preparing a lustration law.

Commenting on the migrant crisis, Karamarko told reporters a joint European plan needed to be adopted and that Croatia must fit into that. He, however, said that should the situation demand it, Croatia would send army because it must protect its borders.

He said the situation was complex and that Europe was not yet ready and it did not have a unified plan for resolving this problem.

"I was in Brussels the other day and this is what I realised. There are various combinations and theories about how this should be handled. One thing is for sure, this is a severe humanitarian problem and many people are suffering while we are talking here," Karamarko told the press in Varazdin where he attended the 26th anniversary of the establishment of the HDZ branch in Varazdin County.

Asked about this government's first month in office, Karamarko said he was pleased with "the atmosphere around and in the government" and that this week the final appointment would be made.
